Marshmallow Mishap

The funniest thing happened at the afternoon show of The Music Man on Saturday, May 30. Michael Gold, who portrayed Harold Hill, did something I don't believe the audience caught. After he tossed up the marshmallow bag at the end of "Marian", the bag slipped through his fingers and he almost didn't catch it. He glanced my way and snickered (yes, he snickered!) and then just before he plopped the marshmallow into Marian's mouth, he almost dropped the marshmallow too but he again caught it, said "Ooops!" quietly, and put it in her mouth. (Yes, I know this sounds like it all went by very slowly, but really, it passed by so fast!) Meanwhile, my whole table is cracking up, but trying not to break character; and Tommy Djilas has been watching this whole thing (well, he's actually supposed to, but...) and when he least expects it, (even though he knows it's going to happen) Marian slaps him and this time, he isn't just acting; he really is in complete shock! Well this makes everyone at the tables crack up more than before. And we were still laughing in the blackout! (Yes, yes I know that this story doesn't really seem that funny to many readers, but to the actors who were on stage at this time, I hope you are reading this and still laughing about it as much as I am!)

  1. Great story! Michael Gold is a fabulous performer. Sounds like he likes to have a lot of fun with his part too.

  2. He absolutely has a lot of fun with his part! And, yes, he is an amazing performer, as we come to expect at the Fine Arts Center, especially from a Broadway veteran.

  3. Haha, almost makes me wish I had seen all these funny things happen. It really pays off to be in a play/musical!
